What is a Single Girder Overhead Crane?
A single girder overhead crane is a material handling system comprising one horizontal bridge girder supported at both ends by end trucks that run on elevated runway rails. The electric wire rope hoist or chain hoist trolley travels along the bottom flange of this girder, enabling precise three-dimensional load movement throughout the workspace.
The overhead crane single girder design is the most widely adopted configuration in Indian industries, offering an ideal balance between structural economy and lifting performance. By utilising the underside of the girder as the trolley track, the design maximises available hook height within a given building clearance.
Single girder overhead cranes are manufactured to IS 3177 and FEM standards and are available in top-running and under-slung (under-hung) configurations, making them suitable for a broad spectrum of light-to-medium duty industrial applications where capacities up to 20 tonnes and spans up to 28 metres are required.
